Thunder Mountain Tours - Wyarno, Wyoming

Welcome to Thunder Mountain Tours!

Hole-in-the-Wall Country

Thunder Mountain Tours focuses on the Bozeman Trail and surrounding area. Visit our TOURS page for a detailed listing of the numerous locations we specialize in. To visit all the historic sites and museums in our area, sometimes known by the Crow name, Absaroka, or Binneesapeele, would take several weeks. As an example our tours travel south to the famous “Hole-in-the-wall” country and the infamous “Johnson County Cattle War” or “The Invasion” as the locals like to call it.

Two of the most popular tours for those with time constraints are; one, a half day loop leaving Sheridan to the Fetterman massacre site, the Wagon box fight, Fort Phil Kearney, French Pete’s trading Post site, portions of the Bozeman Trail route, a Crow/Sioux fight site, the Lt. Shurley skirmish, and back to Sheridan for lunch.

The second can do a quick version of the aforementioned loop, take a back road to the Battle of the Rosebud, and continue north the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and if daylight and time allows, a swing by the Connor Battlefield, and the Sawyer fight site.

Fort Phil Kearny

Red Grade Road

Other sites abound both in Wyoming and just north of the Montana state line, but more time and travel is involved.

I might mention here that, the side trips themselves are an opportunity to photograph scenery and wildlife you will not find along the Interstate.

I also take people to out of the way places like spectacular Porcupine Falls in the Big Horns, Devils Kitchen and the Dinosaur track site near Greybull, the Medicine Wheel, and a scenic loop through the Big Horns up Hwy 14, along the top and back down on the notorious Red Grade to Big Horn, Wyoming which is one of our state’s still functioning authentic old west towns, false fronts and all!

Question of the Month

I post a question and will email the answer to you if you
send me an email address.

This month’s question in history is:
What happened at Wyoming’s bloodiest 4th of July?
